Goody Goody Gumdrops!

Baltimore, Maryland

The story goes that little Mommy and her grandma

Were in the kitchen one day.

When something–no one’s sure just what–

Made her grandma say,

“Goody Goody Gumdrops!”

And oh! they say that Mommy laughed,

Until her eyes filled up with tears,

And that her grandma told this story,

For years and years and years.

  1. My grandma and my mom told this story so many times, that I’m no longer sure whether I retain an actual memory of it–or if it’s just a case where you can picture it in your head with the sense that it’s a memory. I know that it happened–and it wasn’t the only time my grandma had me laughing to tears. I think she tried to recreate that experience as often as she could. It was always something of a mission for her to get me to laugh that hard again.

Now I have, quite possibly, the world’s happiest little girl. She laughs and smiles all the time. My grandma would have gotten a kick out of Josie.

  2. great story, i always knew that your mama had the same effect on me. when she told a story I always was laughing, she too, her laugh had been so inspiring, as i recall, she put her head down with her long hair and laughed, that made me laugh even harder..
